The clean white cloth of Sarah's borrowed apron felt rigid against her skin as she nervously adjusted the straps. The air was filled with the soothing scent of warm pastries and freshly made coffee, but it didn't stop the butterflies in her stomach from fluttering.

Her first day at "Sweet mornings," a lovely small cafe tucked away on a peaceful corner street, was today.

She was nervous, but there was also a glimmer of excitement in her. This was more than simply a job; it was an opportunity to start over, free from Bobby and the restrictive expectations of her past. She inhaled deeply, gritted her teeth, and waved to a crowd of regulars who were already streaming in for their daily shot of caffeine.

Her coworkers, a vibrant group of people, welcomed her right away. Ben was there, the barista with the insatiable supply of stupid jokes and an addiction for latte art. One of the bakers who worked there was Maya; her treats were aesthetically pleasing and delicious.

And then there was Didi, a woman in her early twenties with a giggle that could not be contained and beautiful brown eyes.

Sarah's coworker Didi soon gained Sarah's trust. Sarah found great solace in the peaceful wisdom and gentle strength that she possessed. They became friends over shared lunches and the little time they had between the noon rush to talk about dreams and stories.

Over the coming weeks, Sarah and Didi became inseparable, bonding over shared interests and late-night shifts at the restaurant. As they worked side by side, Sarah found herself opening up to Didi in a way she hadn't with anyone else, sharing bits and pieces of her past and the struggles she had endured.

As the cafe closed and the rain battered the windows on a breezy October evening, Didi made a surprising suggestion to Sarah.

"You know," Didi said, wiping down the counter with practiced ease, "you seem like someone with a story. How about we ditch the dishes and grab some dinner? My treat."

Sarah hesitated, wariness crossing her features. Opening up about her past, especially the painful details of her escape from Bobby, wasn't something she did lightly.

Didi sensed her fear and reached out, placing a warm hand over Sarah's. "Look," she said, her voice gentle yet firm. "You don't have to tell me anything you're not comfortable with. But if you ever want to talk…"

The dam within Sarah seemed to crack. The loneliness that had gnawed at her these past few months, a constant reminder of the life she'd left behind, suddenly felt overwhelming.

"There's so much…" Sarah began, her voice trembling slightly.

Didi squeezed her hand reassuringly. "Take your time," she said, her eyes filled with understanding.

Over steaming plates of pasta at a nearby Italian restaurant, Sarah poured her heart out. She spoke of Bobby's controlling ways, the emotional abuse that had chipped away at her self-esteem, the suffocating isolation he'd imposed.

Her voice cracked as she recounted the day she discovered she was pregnant, the joy overshadowed by Bobby's chilling reaction. And finally, she spoke of her escape – Tiger's unexpected intervention, the terrifying bus ride to an unknown city, the daunting task of building a new life from scratch.

As Sarah spoke, tears streamed down her face, a mixture of pain and defiance. Didi listened intently, her silence a powerful presence in the dimly lit restaurant. When Sarah finished, a long period of silence stretched between them, broken only by the clinking of silverware.

"Wow," Didi finally said, her voice filled with awe. "You…you're incredible, Sarah. What you've been through…it's unimaginable."

Sarah shook her head, wiping her tears with a napkin. "It wasn't easy," she admitted, her voice hoarse. "But I had to do it. For myself, for my baby."

Didi reached across the table, placing a comforting hand on Sarah's. "You know," she said, her gaze filled with admiration, "most people wouldn't have had the courage to do what you did. You escaped a terrible situation, and you're building a new life, all on your own. That's…that's amazing."

A blush crept up Sarah's cheeks. She hadn't thought of herself as strong or courageous. She'd simply done what she had to do, driven by a fierce love for her unborn child and a desperate desire for freedom.

"I don't know what I would have done without Tiger," Sarah admitted, her voice thick with gratitude. "He took a huge risk to help me."

Didi nodded. "Sounds like you have a good one looking out for you."

Late into the night, they continued to talk, their relationship and newly discovered understanding growing. A weight lifted off Sarah's shoulders as they strolled back to the cafe in the warm glow of streetlights. She was not alone, for the first time.

It had been months since her tearful confession to Didi. Her new life had become an extension of the cafe, a welcoming place filled with warm pastries and smiling smiles. Didi had developed into a friend, a source of strength, and a ray of hope in addition to being an advisor.

Didi was present for Sarah's eagerly anticipated scan today, which marked a significant turning point in her path to motherhood.

"As they walked into the examining room, a pleasant voice called out, "Hello Sarah, Didi." A huge machine covered in a white sheet was next to a young woman wearing a name tag that said "Ashley, Ultrasound Technician." She had a beaming smile on her face.

Sarah said, "Hi Ashley," her palm resting protectively on her somewhat protruding abdomen. The much-anticipated ultrasound appointment was finally here. After she'd escaped Bobby months before, the cafe—a refuge of warm pastries and welcoming faces—had grown to feel like a natural extension of her new existence.

Beside her, a source of strength and silent support, was Didi, her listener who had become a friend.

Ashley gestured towards a plush gown folded neatly on a chair. "Please feel free to change into that, Sarah, and then come lie down on the examination table. Didi, you're welcome to stay here if you'd like."

Didi beamed. "Absolutely. Wouldn't miss it for the world."

With a feeling of unease familiar to her, Sarah slipped into the gown. This was more than simply a pregnancy test; it was an opportunity to connect with the developing small life inside of her and get a glimpse into the future.

Ashley touched for a bottle of warm gel as she lay down on the cool examination table, the regular whir of the machine filling the stillness around her.

"Okay, Sarah, this could feel a little chilly," Ashley said as she put the gel on Sarah's abdomen. The image on the black-and-white screen flickered to life as she moved a wand-like device across her skin.

With her eyes fixed on the television, Didi leaned forward. A familiar thrill shot through Sarah's body as she saw it: a small, flickering blob that was pulsing in a faint rhythm. A huge surge of awe and affection overwhelmed her. This tiny miracle, this evidence of her resilience, was beginning to take shape.

The sterile examination room was filled with the rhythmic hum of the ultrasound equipment, occasionally broken by the click-clack of the technician's keyboard. Sarah gripped Didi's hand hard as she gazed fixedly at the black and white television, feeling a familiar knot of anxiety rise in her gut..

"There you go," the technician said, pointing to the flickering image. "Looks like a healthy little one at twenty weeks."

Sarah squeezed Didi's hand, relief washing over her. Her journey hadn't been easy, but seeing the confirmation of life on the screen filled her with an overwhelming sense of joy.

Didi grinned, her eyes filled with genuine happiness for her friend. "See, Sarah? Everything's perfect," she whispered, her voice filled with emotion.

The technician continued her examination, meticulously measuring the growth of the embryo. Then, a slight pause hung in the air.

"Hmm," she murmured, her brow furrowed in concentration. She manipulated the transducer again, her movements deliberate. A wave of unease washed over Sarah, her heart skipping a beat.

"Is something wrong?" Sarah asked, her voice barely a whisper.

The technician looked up, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Not wrong, exactly," she said. "Just…unexpected."

Sarah's stomach tightened. Unexpected? What did that mean? Didi squeezed her hand reassuringly, her own expression filled with concern.

"See here," the technician said, pointing to the screen. "There seem to be…two gestational sacs."

Sarah stared at the image, her mind struggling to understand what she was seeing. Two? Two what? Her eyes turned to Didi, seeking an explanation.

Didi's eyes widened in surprise, followed by a slow grin that spread across her face.

"Twins, Sarah!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement. "You're having twins!"

Sarah felt the news like a ton of bread. Is there a pair? Her journey became an unexpected experience when the one flickering dot she had been expecting doubled. Shock, amazement, a tiny bit of fear, and finally an overpowering sense of wonder flooded over her.

"Twins?" Sarah finally managed, her voice trembling slightly.
