ANNABELLE'S POV
I always remember the days when I had everything, my family and friends. I would give anything to go back to that life, when I was happy. I miss them so much, and it's depressing that I had to lose them so soon.
Don't get me wrong. I am happy that my uncle gave me a place to stay. It's better than being out on the streets.
My mother was a werewolf, a person who is able to shift into a wolf after the age of sixteen. From what I've heard from her, the first shift is always painful.
I don't really remember the first time she shifted in front of me. All I know is it was something normal in our house, so it wasn't weird at all. My father and I escorted her to the woods to shift where I always watched her with so much fascination as she ran around in her wolf form. Sometimes her brown wolf would chase me around playfully until I was out of breath. I even rode on her wolf a few times, which was really fun.
I once held onto the hope that I would be one of the few half werewolves that are able to shift into their wolf form. I hoped I carried the wolf gene from my mother, but unfortunately, the older I grew, the more I realized I wasn't going to get what I wanted. I was stuck with my father's genes, and I just had to accept it.
My mom found her mate at the age of eighteen. A mate. Someone who you have an immediate connection with the moment you lay eyes on each other. Someone that is destined for you, the connection is so strong that you are drawn to them in a way you cant even control or comprihend, you cant help but be protective and possessive of the precious bond.
When my mother found her mate, she moved out of the pack house to stay with my father because not everyone was okay with Alpha blood being mated to a human, especially her brother, uncle Nicholas, who was next in line to become Alpha. It's rare, but it happens. I have never met my grandparents and uncle. I just heard about them from my mother, who rarely talked about them.
When my parents died, I started having nightmares about their death, and reliving that moment is always heartbreaking. As time went by, they wouldn't come as often as they did before, and today happened to be the day when I was graced with them.
"Wake up Anna" I heard someone say in a panicked voice.
"Anna, wake up," the same voice said. I opened my eyes and saw mom looking terrified.
"Mom, what's wrong? I want to sleep "I said while rubbing sleep off my eyes.
"Weneedtogosomething happened-and, Anna, WE JUST NEED TO GO OKAY?" she said while panicking. I have never seen mom so terrified and that's what got me out of sleepy mode. I got out of bed fast, as if something burnt me, and I was fully awake. I also started to panic ....... I mean who wouldn't?
"Where are we going mom, and WHAT HAPPENED?!"
"The house is on fire sweetie, we need to go fast! I'll explain everything later, okay??" and that's when I smelt the smoke. I don't know how I managed to sleep through this smoke. Will we make it out of this alive?! I pray we do!!
Ohhh moon goddess help us. Wait, where is DAD!!
"Mom, where's dad and are we going to be okay?" I asked with fear. I mean, what do you expect from a fifteen-year-old?
"Your Dad is downstairs trying to put out the fire and making phone calls. And yes, honey, we are going to be okay" she said while kissing my forehead. We ran out of the house and went to the backyard. It was big and led to the forest, and it was good because mom could shift easily without being noticed by humans.
Each house in this part of town has the same arrangement. I looked around and saw dad typing angrily on his phone. The moment he saw us approaching, he looked in my direction and gave me a sad smile. I smiled back and ran to him.
He engulfed me in his warm embrace and I hugged him tightly. Dad called the firefighters and the fire was put out. I am relieved, at least I'm not dying today and my parents are okay.
I am grateful to be alive but saddened by the fact that all those memories and pictures are burnt down, but I think they could be some things that survived. I'll ask dad about it later.
"Everything is going to be okay. I'll always protect you. Just know whatever happens tonight, your mother and I love you a lot, okay" I just nodded, I didn't have the energy to even speak. I was just a crying mess.
"Your mom and I have called uncle Nicholas, I think you'll be safer with him at the pack house. " I didn't know what to say when they said I wouldn't see them again. I can't just go stay with people I barely know literally.
"Dad, I can't go stay with uncle Nicholas. I barely know him. And I think I'll be fine with you guys, you have always protected me," I told him angrily. There was no way I was going to stay with an uncle who never really cared for me, and why should I even run away from my problems?
"Anna, listen to your father. This is the last option we have. It's for your safety"Mom tried to reason with me, it doesn't matter because they have already made their decision and nothing will make them change their minds.
Coming to think of it, I have nothing to lose. I can always make new friends, right? I've been homeschooled for as long as I can remember and the only person I used to talk to was an old lady next door and her beautiful daughter.
"Are you guys coming with me?" I asked them and they nodded. I am relieved, at least I am not going alone.
We waited for what seemed like hours, but it was only twenty minutes. I saw a black SUV, but before it could stop, my attention shifted to the six rouges that were coming from the treeline. They were running in our direction.
I think mom sensed it because she shifted in her brown wolf and started launching in their direction, while dad got his gun from the back of his jeans. That way, he distracted some of the rogues and mom dealt with the rest.
Mom pounced on one and bit its tail, and it clawed her back in return. She let go of the tail and bit it on the neck hard, until it died.
Another one came and attacked her from behind. Dad aimed the gun at it and shot it. Then I saw a huge man, who I assume came from the black SUV, shifted into his black wolf and launched at the rest of the wolves. He fought two rouges at once, and mom managed to kill the second rouge. That's when I saw the one running in Dad's direction.
"DAD BEHIND YOU!" I shouted, but it was too late because the rogue pounced on him, clawed him, and bit his neck. I saw my father's soulless eyes looking at me. I couldn't believe this was happening, and I heard mom's Wolf's howl......she was howling at the loss of her mate, and when I thought it couldn't get any worse, another rogue attacked mom and killed her.
Tears fell from my eyes and my body couldn't take it anymore. I started seeing black dots. My eyelids felt heavy and I just fell. I think I hit my head hard because I don't remember anything apart from two strong arms carrying me to the car and everything going black.
