[Echo]About an hour after dark, Wendell showed the vampire into the office. Victor was sitting in his chair behind the desk and I was right next to him. We stood when he came in and Wendell closed the door. The vampire looked young. Most vampires looked like they were in their twenties, though at different points in that age range. He looked like he hadn’t had a chance to grow into his body before he passed into his second life. His hair was pale brown and his eyes were a light green. The only vampire I knew with green eyes was Marius, but his were a darker and more intense green. This man had mint green eyes. His face was boyish and he was lanky. “Master and Mistress Nightshade, it is my pleasure to have been called,” he said as he bowed. “Please have a seat, Ronaldo. Echo, this is one of our young vampires. Ronaldo is about four hundred years old and has lived in the area for two hundred years. You met him briefly at the Solstice party,” Victor explained. “I’m sorry, I was meeting a lot of other people and don’t remember you.” I blushed. “It is entirely understandable, Mistress. I appreciate your apology, but it is not needed.” Ronaldo made his way across the office and had a seat in front of the desk. Up close, he looked even younger. I couldn’t believe I forgot him, but that was a very busy night for us with the party and Phoebe’s arrival at the house very early in the morning. “Did you have a chance to look over the materials?” Victor asked. “I did. One of my friends disappeared a while ago and if they are in this community, I definitely want to find them. There is no information at all about what is happening to the vampires there?” Victor shook his head. “No. The spies from our allies said vampires were housed in a different area from the general population. When they asked after them, they were told that the vampires were a little more reclusive than other supernaturals. We need you to go in and find out if they’re safe and the reason they joined this community rather than submitting to me.” Ronaldo listened carefully. He seemed to be absorbing everything Victor said. They started talking about plans to find someone to bring him into the community. I was glad that Victor was including me, but I didn’t feel like I had anything to contribute. At the end of the meeting, Ronaldo shook Victor’s hand and bowed to me. He was going off in search of recruiters. Gray came in and took me to the dining room to have dinner while Victor recorded everything for his notes and reports. “Did you have a good day today, Angel?” Gray asked as we ate. “It was about the usual. What about you? What did you do today?” I replied. Gray launched into a descriptive story about all the work he did that day. He was never this animated when he was a waiter. I knew he really loved working for Rock. It made me happy to know he was happy about his work. Victor came into the room as we were finishing up. He sat on my other side and nodded to Gray. “Did Echo tell you she’s been having nightmares?” Victor asked. I blushed and focused on my food. Gray sighed and put his hand over mine. “You’re supposed to let us know, Angel. How can we take care of you if you bottle up things? When you need us, you tell us. Don’t keep secrets. We can’t help if we don’t know what’s going on with you,” Gray told me. “I didn’t want to be a burden….”“You’re never a burden to us, Echo,” they said at the same time. I smiled and nodded, while keeping my eyes down. Gray reached out and tucked a finger under my chin, using it to lift my face.“We want to help you heal. Hiding your pain only hurts us. We can’t be good mates to you if you don’t tell us,” Gray said gently. “Please don’t hide from us.” “Dennis is on his way to help Echo sleep. I figured we’d do bedtime earlier so she can sleep more. Do you mind?” Victor asked Gray. “I don’t mind at all. A little extra sleep would be good.” “Are you sure, Gray? I know you like to relax after work and play some games or watch TV,” I said. “If I said it, I’m sure of it, Echo. Let’s finish dinner and go clean up. We can get changed for bed afterward and be all ready when Dennis gets here.” “I love you both so much. Thank you for not being mad at me,” I said softly. “We love you too and we would never be mad about this, Echo. Just make sure to tell us next time,” Gray told me. “I agree with Grayson. We would never be mad, but we are a little disappointed because it feels like you don’t trust us when you don’t tell us these things. I know you were always told you were a burden, but we will never think of you in that way, Echo,” Victor added. I nodded. It might still be hard, but I would work on it. I loved Victor and Gray with all of my heart and I never wanted them to feel like I didn’t trust them. I was grateful that they shared their real feelings with me. Gray and I finished dinner and went to the kitchen to clean up. Wendell had eaten earlier and cleaned up from cooking, but didn’t start the dishwasher so we could add our dishes to it. This was part of our routine. It was nice to do something so normal with Gray. He stood close to me while we washed the dishes and I leaned against him. I loved spending time with him and I was eager for the weekend so we could have more time.I went upstairs and took a shower before changing into my most modest nightgown. Gray and Victor didn’t like other people seeing me in my pajamas, even this one, which was full length with cap sleeves and a modest neckline. It was a good thing I thought of Dennis as a family member, they wouldn’t get as bad because of that. After putting my robe and slippers on, I went into the bedroom to find Gray in his pajama pants and a tank top. I wasn’t as possessive as my husbands were, but I appreciated him thinking of me. He was trying to be modest, too. We headed downstairs. Victor was opening the front door to let Dennis and Sybil in. I smiled at them and gave them each a hug. They looked so happy together. “I heard you were having troubling dreams, Echo. I have constructed a dream for you, but I am a little concerned. Since you’re immune to hypnotism and mind control, it might not work. What I would like to do instead is link your dreams to Gray and Master Nightshade. “Basically, it is connecting a tether between you and them in the dream realm. Once you’re asleep, Gray will be pulled into the dream realm with you. After the dream is established, if it works on Master Nightshade, he will be able to join you,” Dennis explained. “How will that work if I’m not sleeping?” Victor asked. “It will be as if you have split vision. You will be able to move your dream avatar and speak through him. There is a bit of a learning curve, but you should be able to master it quickly. “This will also answer the question of if I can make this work on other vampires. It’s part of my dream manipulation ability. If this doesn’t work on you, then the ability to create dreams won’t work. I don’t know if it will keep working after you go to sleep for the day, either. Since you go to sleep after the sun comes up, it might be wise to let Echo sleep in if you can.” “Echo has been groggy in the morning and forcing herself to get up when my alarm goes off, probably to get away from the dreams. If she’s soothed, then I think she’ll sleep through the alarm,” Gray replied. Dennis nodded. “It would be best for her to get as much sleep as possible. If you have a sleeping draught or medicine, it would be best to have her take one of those.” “I didn’t have time to contact any witches or fae about something to help Echo sleep. If this works, we can make sure we have it on hand for tomorrow night,” Victor told him. “We should go somewhere comfortable. Sybil will be observing so she can learn how to move the magic. She isn’t able to do this yet, but learning part of it will help her when she can.” “Let’s go up to the bedroom. That way we won’t have as far to go,” Gray suggested. Everyone agreed and the five of us headed up to the master bedroom. I took the lead with Gray beside me. When we got into the room, I turned to everyone else. Dennis came over to me. He held out his hands and I accepted them. Sybil came up behind him and put a hand on his shoulder. I looked up into Dennis’ eyes. They started to glow. “You will dream of a happy event, a time when you were safe with your husbands and felt protected. Do you understand, Echo?” Dennis said in a very serious voice. I could feel the annoyance that came when vampires tried to mind control me. With a frown, I shook my head. Even if it was something not harmful, it looked like I couldn’t accept mind control. “I’m sorry, Dennis,” I sighed. “That’s alright, Echo. We already knew it was unlikely to work. I feel your connection to the dream realm. I will attempt to connect it to your husbands,” he replied. Dennis let me go and went to Gray. He held out his hands and stared into Gray’s eyes. I could feel the press of some sort of magic filling the room. He smiled and nodded, then went to Victor. He was a little awkward as he repeated the process on Victor. I knew Dennis revered Victor and wanted to make him happy. Dennis wasn’t much younger than Victor and Victor treated him as much like an equal as he could without undermining his own authority. “I feel the connections,” Dennis announced as he released Victor’s hands. “It seems it was successful, Master Nightshade.” “This will definitely be intriguing. Thank you, Dennis. I will contact you tomorrow, after I wake, to let you know how it went,” Victor replied. “I will look forward to it. Sybil and I will see ourselves out,” Dennis said. “I hope you get some rest, Echo.” “Thank you, Dennis. Have a good night.” He and Sybil left our room and I turned to Gray. He came over and picked me up, carrying me to our bed. Gray set me down on the bed and I crawled into the center. Normally, we fooled around or had ѕex before bed, but I was so tired and it all seemed to weigh on me. Gray got into bed and Victor got in on his side. They cuddled me and I slipped into darkness. -I was in the basement where I lived before Victor saved me. It was dark and dank. I had a feeling of dread. Something in me said it was Saturday and I was supposed to get ready for a vampire to come feed on me. It was as if I had no control over myself. I started getting ready. I brushed my hair and picked out a dress. It wasn’t like any dress I ever owned before I moved in with Victor. It was a pure white shift dress. When I put it on, it made me look pasty and sickly. My eyes glowed in the mirror. When I heard the door upstairs close, I turned to the stairs and headed up to feed my client. My whole body was shaking. I felt like I was going to die. It was a common fear for me back when I was living with my other family. At the top of the stairs, I opened the door. Normally, it would open into the kitchen in my old house. Instead, the door opened to a cavern. That didn’t give me pause, though. I walked along a narrow path until I came to a stone altar. I climbed onto the altar and laid down. My fake father came over and smeared something on my forehead. I didn’t move. I wasn’t strapped down or anything, just content to lay there and wait for my death. “Your evil will end tonight, Echo. The world will be a better place without you because you are giving life to something more powerful. Your sacrifice will be remembered for centuries in the new world we are creating,” he said before turning to the darkness. “Come forth and receive this gift!” Looking down my body, I saw the shadows move. Something large was in the shadow it was the shadow. My heart started racing. The thing moved out of the shadows. It was huge and terrifying for a few moments, then it changed to look like Daniel Darknight, the vampire who tried to take me from Victor last spring. It wasn’t normal though, he wasn’t human size. He was giant. His fangs were huge and dripped blood-tinged saliva as he stalked closer. Huge wings sprouted from his back and he was more animal than man.Inside my head, I sсreamed, but my body didn’t move. Instead of fighting or running, I bared my neck to him. A commotion in the darkness drew my attention. I managed to look over and saw Victor and Gray fighting through a group of people. Helplessly, I watched them. The monster stopped coming for me and, instead, grabbed my fake father and dragged him into the shadows as he sсreamed. I could hear the slurping and crunching as the monstrous Daniel-thing ate him. Victor and Gray got to me. Gray picked me up. I didn’t move. I was frozen in my body. Victor wiped the stuff off my forehead. It was as if that released me. I held on to Gray’s neck tightly and we ran out of the cavern. Victor took the lead and fought off anything and anyone who tried to stop us. As we ran out of the cavern, I could hear people sсreaming followed by the same crunching and slurping sounds from earlier. I looked behind us and could see the monster gorging itself on the bodies of the people Victor had fought. Most of them were still alive, but none of them sсreamed until they were inside its mouth and the teeth were coming down on them. Tears filled my eyes. The only thought in my head was ‘why did they take me away from my destiny?’ I wanted to be eaten by the thing, but I still didn’t fight Gray. It was as if him touching me let me actually control the dream body. We went through the entrance of the cave and there was a door sitting in the moonlight. A beam of light shone on it. Victor ran for the door and opened it. Gray didn’t stop to question it, he just ran right through. On the other side of the door, we found ourselves in my garden on a summer night. The crazy thoughts weren’t in my head anymore. I held on to Gray and shook. That was the worst dream I’d had yet. I was so grateful to Dennis for helping them save me so I didn’t get eaten by that thing. “Damn, Echo, when you have a nightmare, you really go all out,” Gray whispered as he held me tight. “Why did you trust that door, Victor?” “It had an old symbol vampires used to use for a safe haven on it. It was instinct,” Victor answered as he came over and wrapped his arms around us. “Everything is alright now. Nothing can harm you here, Echo. We won’t let it.” I couldn’t stop myself from crying. I was really safe. That monster was terrifying and I had the feeling there was more to this dream than it seemed. For now, I was just grateful to be in the arms of my husbands in our garden at home.
