[Sean]When we got a call from Carmen asking us to come to a barbeque at her house with her mate, I was surprised. Now that I knew more supernaturals, I knew how private most people were in the first week of mating. I was sitting in our room when I got the text from her. She asked about inviting Gray and some of my other friends. She wanted to get to know people in the community. She wanted to know who else was permitted in the fae lands. Maeve told me Carmen’s father was being punished by the Alpha for his treatment of Carmen. Rosario was happy about that. He’d been in a mood ever since his own asshole father disappeared. Rosario came in the room and I was instantly mesmerized. He was absolutely gorgeous, with dark hair cascading over his shoulders and bright green eyes that seemed to shimmer in the light. He was wearing a white skirt thing around his waist that hugged him in all the right places, and I could see the outline of his.... Goddess, I loved everything about him. He smiled at me, and I felt my heart skip a beat.“What are you doing? We’re supposed to be getting ready for the wedding,” he laughed. We were going to an elf wedding in the fae village. The base of the outfit for the guests was a length of cloth. Men wore it around their waists and women wore it in an intricate wrap that covered their chest and waist. Normally, it was colorful, but since Rosario was a prince, his was white. It glowed against his dark brown skin and made him look even more delicious than he normally did. I wanted to lick every inch of him, but I would contain myself. Instead, I went to get my cloth. It was melon orange and Rosario said it reminded him of ripe cantaloupe.“Carmen texted. She wanted to invite us to a barbeque this weekend. She wanted us to invite Gray and Echo, plus whoever else we could. She’s inviting her friends. One of them just met her mate, too. So it’s a little bit of a celebration. What do you think?” I asked as I started taking off my clothes to change. “Don’t forget it’s traditional to leave underclothes off,” Rosario purred. I blushed. “Stop that! I know what you’re doing and don’t even try that line about asking your mother, because I know she’s in on it!” He laughed and started putting on the other things he needed. Flowers needed to be tied in his hair a certain way and accessories were added to the outfit to add color. He would wear a golden armband on each arm etched with Sylvan words. There was a vine he wore at his waist that would bloom once he tied it right. I wished I looked half as good as he did. I was starting to gain some muscle from training and my transformation into a pixie, but I was still a pretty scrawny guy and I knew I would never be bulky, my wings wouldn’t be able to carry me if I got too heavy. A cutting of one of Rosario’s vines would be tied into my hair as a way for him to stake his claim. Neither one of us was old enough to mark the other, but we knew we were true mates. The moon goddess came to me in a dream back in spring and told me Rosario was my true mate and I was always meant to become fae to be with him. “We don’t have anything going on this weekend if you wanted to go to the barbecue. Are any other trolls going to be there, or can I relax the prince act? I want to go and have fun,” he said. I bent over to dig into my pants for my phone. Never one to give up an opportunity, I felt Rosario’s vines start to pull down my underwear. “Stop it,” I warned. “I’m not wearing any, come on, Sean. This one time, don’t let your human side make you prudish.” “I’ll do it if you promise not to embarrass me like you did last time.” “I promise I will not embarrass you like I did last time.” Pulling out my phone, I sent a message to Carmen asking about other trolls, and then I took off my underwear and started trying the cloth. There was a trick to it that I could never seem to get. It was frustrating. Rosario came over and took it from me. He was all business when it came to things like this. No matter how many times I watched him do it, I couldn’t manage it. Once I was properly wrapped up, Rosario kissed the tip of my nose and went back to finish getting ready. I blushed. He always did that to me, damn it. I went to put on the beaded arm bands I’d wear and the necklaces with the same sort of vine belt as Rosario. “You’re gorgeous, you know, Sean.” “No, you’re gorgeous. I’m spindly and scrawny.” I sighed. He came over to me and turned my head. “You are gorgeous and that is why I put my vine in your hair. So no one tries to steal what’s mine. No one tries to steal me, but you get hit on wherever we go, especially around other elves and any nature fae with wings.” “They’re not hitting on me they’re just talking to me. It’s not every day you see a pixie my size,” I replied, turning away from him. “Especially since I have to have my wings out for these things.” “At that club two weekends ago, at least three different fae tried to trick you into going with them and one shapeshifter nearly got you out of the club. You can’t simply trust people because they’re supernaturals, Sean. Someone is going to take you away from me,” Rosario warned. “If I’m that much trouble, I don’t know why you bother keeping me.” “No pouting. You’re a lot of trouble because you don’t realize how handsome you really are, Sean. And, yeah, a lot of it is because you’re a man-sized pixie, but pixies are among the most beautiful races of the fae.” He sighed. “Sean, you might have seen yourself as a dull human, but you are a gorgeous fae and you have to learn to see the signs of danger.” My phone chimed, stopping his lecture. We had this conversation a lot. I didn’t see what everyone else apparently did. All I saw was a green version of my old geeky self. “Carmen says no trolls this weekend except for Rock.” “Fine, we can go. Are you almost ready for the wedding?” Rosario asked. “Whose wedding is this? We go to so many of these things. Did all of them wait until your dad was gone to get married or something?” I grumbled. “We’ve been to three, not counting this one. You are a prince now, you need to act like it and that means you go to events like this when you’re invited as long as it doesn’t coincide with a more pressing engagement. Now that I’ve graduated, more things like this will be going on.” I groaned and let him tie a piece of one of his vines in my hair. We finished dressing and headed to the living room. Maeve was waiting for us. She was going to the wedding as well. She was dressed like Rosario, in white with glowing gold arm cuffs. We headed out to the village. It never seemed like a long trek that was the way of the fae lands. They always seemed to move in whatever way they wanted, especially in the forest. I had no idea where we actually were, but it was beautiful. Like the fae lands where we came from, there were houses lining roads, but the roads were dirt and the houses were made of living trees. They formed into buildings and one door never led to the same room twice, not unless the house wanted you to go there. There was a central area where people would gather or children would play. It was called the heart of the village and Rosario told me it was where the roots of all the houses met. The village was sectioned off to accommodate the species who called it home. Each section was named for the species. This was the elf village. When the children saw me enter the village with my wings out, they came running. They all wanted to touch my wings or have me fly them around the village. Rosario always told them I couldn’t do that for one reason or another. That didn’t stop them from coming to ask. We greeted people and I saw Rosario’s sister, Ivy standing in the center of the heart of the village. I looked at Rosario and he smiled. “I won’t tell my sister you forgot today was her wedding to her true mate. They will be the king and queen of the village, our partners in ruling our people.” “Ѕhit, I didn’t mean to forget. We’ve just been going to so many things it slipped my mind,” I whispered. “Don’t worry. As long as you don’t forget whose wedding you’re going to when we get married….” Rosario laughed. “I wouldn’t forget that. I’m sad my parents won’t be able to see it, though.” “We can get married by human law in a few years. We want to wait until you can control your wings a little better. We don’t want them popping out and ruining a suit,” he said. I did that a couple times. My wings were really strong and they would sometimes ruin clothes if they came out. They came out when my emotions were overpowering. Marrying Rosario would definitely make them pop out. He took my hand and led me over to his sister. Ivy was a little scary at times, but she was only very serious about keeping her community safe. She was appalled by what her father did. Not the hurting Rosario, but the helping curse their people. So many of the fae had been hurt and were only barely starting to heal. Where many of them were only able to use their glamour for eight hours a day, a large portion of the population lost the ability altogether. It was terrible and caused a serious fracture in the relationships and lives of the fae in the human village and the ones in the hidden village. Ivy didn’t like the idea of trying to rule people by force. She was a better queen than her father was a king. I knew Rosario would be an amazing king. I only hoped I would be able to be the kind of support a leader like him needed. “Ivy, you look radiant,” Rosario said, embracing his sister and kissing her on both cheeks. “I appreciate the compliment, Rio. You’re quite fetching in your formal attire as well. Hello, Sean. I’m glad you made it.” “Your invitation was much appreciated, Ivy. I’m eager to attend your wedding,” I replied. She smiled at me. I was pretty sure that was the first time I ever saw her smile. Normally, she was serious and stoic. This was her wedding to her true mate, though. I hoped she was really happy. A tall Sylvan entered the area and smiled warmly at Ivy. She waved him over. He was dressed in a green cloth, as the other Sylvans would be. He was handsome and matched Ivy well. “This is my true mate, Ewan. He comes from the forests of the Eastern US.” Ivy told us. “Ewan, this is my little brother, Rosario, and his true mate Sean.” “It’s a pleasure to meet you both. I’ve heard stories about the man-size pixie from the children. I thought they were joking.” He laughed. “Sean used to be human,” Rosario said. “Oh? The transformation can be dangerous. You’re very lucky to have survived it and become something so lovely to look at.” “He’s mine, Ewan, you’ll have to make do with my beautiful sister.” Rosario chuckled. “I’ll make more than do….” Ewan replied, using his vines to pull Ivy closer to him. She laughed and swatted them away. It was nice to see happy couples who didn’t have difficulties like so many of my friends seemed to. I couldn’t help but smile. “Places, please. Ewan, get your vines off her,” Maeve scolded. “My apologies, Queen Maeve, I couldn’t help myself, my bride is too lovely.” “Just wait until the ceremony is over to get frisky with my daughter, please. You’ll have the rest of your lives to play with each other’s vines.” We took our places. The guests of the bride and groom stood in a circle with joined hands while they said their vows. It was all done in archaic Sylvan. It was different from the language I was learning and I could only understand a few things. Rosario explained what was being said to me once before. Maeve was telling a story about the first Sylvans to become true mates. Their love was like a seed and it created a love that blew throughout the world like dandelion fluff. It created new loves in new places where no love existed. To this day, ‘The Marriage of Sylvanus’ is a revered and protected tree that grows in the fae realm, blessing the fae with love of true mates. She draped a vine, which is said to have come off the tree, over their hands. It binds the love of a Sylvan to their true mate and keeps hearts warm. They repeat her words of love and dedication to each other and to the goddess, asking for her blessing. Their vines came out of the hands that were draped with the vine from the tree. They twined with the vine then spread up the other person’s arm and formed an intricate design over their heart. This is the marking of the vines. “Together in the eyes of the goddess and your people. Until the end of eternity, your heart belongs to the other. Love, truth, honor, all of these will be the root of your love. May it grow and flourish until time is no more.” “So be it.” We answered in modern Sylvan. The wedding was finished with a kiss from Maeve to each member of the couple and a kiss shared between the couple themselves. It was beautiful and always made my wings flutter. I guess I didn’t hate these things as much as I pretended.
