Atlas POV
Being in a different room from Mia was emotionally challenging. Now, having to travel away from her felt almost unbearable. Bryn had given us the exact address of our destination, but the journey would take us several days, with the potential for trouble along the way. This meant it could be anywhere from a week to even longer before I could reunite with Mia. During this time, Bryn would keep her wolf dormant, unable to shift, which caused her pain.
The thought of Mia suffering or falling ill pained me deeply. She had been distant all day, perhaps unsure of what to say. When it was time to depart, Bryn handed Flint the car keys, and we set off. Mia buried her head against me briefly before swiftly retreating back into the palace without looking back. I longed to chase after her, but I knew completing our task quickly was essential. As Flint started the engine and began driving, he spoke, "She didn't want you to witness her cry," he sighed. I gazed out the window. "I understand," I replied.

"I know we must be cautious, as not many in this world are accepting of us right now. Without Mia, we may encounter fewer challenges since they can't sense what they desire, but it won't be easy," Flint warned me. "I'm well aware," I assured him as we left the protective barrier of the palace. "I don't like leaving our mate. We must hurry," Brutus conveyed to me through our mental connection.
"I want to learn everything about Mia. While she is open with me, there is still much she keeps hidden. You've been by her side for most of your life, so perhaps you can provide some insight," I confessed to Flint. He chuckled softly. "I'll share what I know, but truthfully, she locked away much of who she truly is to everyone, only acting as she was taught and instructed," Flint admitted.
"Was she happy?" I asked him, my voice filled with curiosity. He paused for a moment, contemplating his response. "Truthfully, I don't know," he admitted, his voice tinged with uncertainty. As we sat in the car, the leather seats creaked softly beneath us. The faint scent of pine air freshener hung in the air.
"I understand that you're still adjusting to being a Lycan," he cautioned, his voice gentle but firm. "But please, don't let your anger consume you if we discuss Mia. I know how tempting it can be to try and fix the past of our mates, but the truth is, there is no fixing it. We can only work towards a better future." He instructed.
"In my opinion, Mia was and still is one of the most loyal wolves you will ever meet," he continued, his voice filled with admiration. "She always prioritized everyone's safety above her own. Day and night, she trained tirelessly to become a warrior capable of protecting her pack. She obeyed her father's every command without complaint. Unfortunately, her devotion came at a cost. She didn't have many friends within our pack, as they feared her powers."
“In all honesty, she had only one friend, Leo. They were inseparable, always by each other's side. Leo, a rogue orphan, joined our pack and faced mistreatment from many, but not from Mia. She didn't care about his past or his lack of parents. She claimed him as family. Mia possessed a pure heart, untouched by the darkness that consumed most of our kind. And in return, I believe Leo was the reason she didn't fade away, especially when she reached the age to find her mate.” Flint took a deep breath before continuing.

“Mia claimed her family showed her love, perhaps that was the narrative she clung to in order to keep moving forward. But from what I witnessed, her father was never gentle with her, unlike her brother and younger sister. Mia was always the one to shoulder everything. She was the first to be sent if our pack was under attack on our own land. She took on the majority of the chores in the pack house, even though there were staff members assigned to cooking and cleaning. Yet, she was still expected to do it all. And she was also the one who endured punishments, often for things she didn't even do.” He continued, unraveling the complex web of Mia's life.
"Punishment," I asked, as we continued on the road. Luckily, the drive so far was smooth.
"I remember one night, Mia's younger sister at fourteen snuck in a male wolf from a nearby pack. They had a secret relationship, but he was just using Mia's sister for information. Her sister would leave her station to be with him on the nights she had watch. Well, one night, he strayed from Mia's sister and sneaked into the main house, attempting to steal information. The guards were quick to apprehend him. When questioned about how he got in, Mia's sister lied, claiming that Mia had taken her watch duty that night. I still recall being called in to deal with the questioning of the male wolf. I was in the pack house when Mia's father ordered the guards to fetch her from her room. I watched as she was scolded, and the moment her eyes met her sister's, she took the blame. She knew that if she fought it, she would be yelled at for trying to blame her sister.
In our kingdom, the punishment for leaving your station was twenty silver lashes and a week in the pack dungeon. It was severe, but leaving one's post could potentially cost innocent lives. Mia willingly took the punishment. Her father had it held the morning after in front of the pack house so that all members could witness. I remember her brother's fury towards her father for punishing her like that. The guards claimed she stayed in the corner of the cell. She never once complained, and when she was released, she returned to her life with a smile on her face, even towards her sister. That was one of the many times I failed her. I should have stood up for her and stood in the way of her father, but he was my king. I feared punishment, yet she endured hers when she didn't even deserve it," Flint spoke.

Inside me, Brutus was going wild. It felt as if I had a caged creature trying to break free, yearning to bring Mia's father back to life just so he could be killed. Mia loved her family, and I could tell by the way she spoke of them. Yet, they in no way deserved her love.
"I can't even imagine the excruciating pain she must have been in," I growled, my voice tinged with anger, but I also maintained my composure.
"Me either," Flint admitted, his voice low and filled with concern. "She rarely showed any signs of pain, even during that brutal punishment. She always wore a blank expression. I had never heard her scream in pain until earlier today when you brought her inside from the run."
"As a special wolf, silver doesn't harm Mia as severely as it would a wolf like me. But it can still cause her harm, even lead to her death. She has also been training herself on wolf's bane, despite her brother's attempts to stop her. I would advise keeping a close watch on her with that, as I don't think it's safe. Some werewolves do it, but every time they do, they risk their lives."Flint continued.
Confusion filled my voice as I asked, "What do you mean?"
"Mia doses herself with wolfsbane to build a stronger tolerance. In reality, she is poisoning herself," Flint explained, his words carrying a hint of sadness. "I know of several instances where she took too much and had to be admitted to the pack hospital. Her father actually commended her for training herself."
"She was dosed with Wolfsbane at the safe house, but she said it was a large amount." I admitted.
Flint nodded, his expression troubled. "I'm sure she handled it better due to her self-training, but I still don't agree with the practice."
"Is it typically this clear on the roads?" I asked, shifting our focus momentarily.
Flint's voice held a hint of unease as he responded, "No, but I am keeping an eye out. Something is definitely wrong"
I kept a watchful eye out of the window. When I returned to Mia, I was determined to make sure she knew just how important she was to me. As I gazed out at the empty road, I felt a surge of emotion. Mia had never been treated as someone who should be treasured or respected, and it saddened me deeply.
I wanted her to know that there was a life beyond the pain and mistreatment she had endured. She needed to know It was okay for her to be angry over what had happened to her. Perhaps it was my destiny to be raised as a human so that I could be the one to save and protect Mia.
I glanced at the reflection of my determined face in the car window, my lycan strength ready to shield her from any danger. But I knew that Mia was a fighter, a strong-willed soul who didn't need a knight in shining armor. She needed someone to love her unconditionally, to be there for her emotionally.
She deserved someone who would never abuse her and would always respect her, someone who wouldn't fear her but embrace her for who she truly was. Growing up away from this world had given me a different perspective, allowing me to truly cherish people for who they were.
I longed to see Mia's smile, not just a facade of happiness, but a genuine one. I wanted her to experience true happiness, to feel it in her heart. Together, we would create a life where she could finally be truly happy.
Once we were back in the human realm, Flint took a deep breath, relief evident in his eyes. The absence of any rogue wolf attacks surprised him. "That's not normal," he admitted, as we pulled up at a gas station. The flickering lights and faint smell of gasoline filled the air, adding to my growing unease. "What if they're using this opportunity to snatch Mia and break down the barrier?" I asked, my voice tinged with worry.
"Bryn's barrier will keep Mia safe," Flint reassured me. "They're just wasting time of that's the case. But they might cause more trouble on our return trip."
Taking over the wheel, I felt a mix of anticipation and anxiety. The GPS finally worked in the car, its robotic voice guiding us to our destination. Bryn had warned us about the danger we would face. The witch lived on the border of another pack settled in the human realm. The tension between her and Thora, even as blood relatives, worked in our favor. This witch was powerful, known for her trickery, and her survival instincts were sharp. However, facing her wouldn't be an easy fight, even with me and Flint.
We continued to take turns driving, the hum of the engine filling the air as we pressed on. The monotonous road stretched out before us, the passing scenery a blur. As we traveled further, a knot of worry tightened in my chest for Mia. Unable to mind-link and with the barrier blocking any phone signals, her pain remained a mystery. Every passing minute intensified my concern, driving me to complete our task fast.
Finally, we arrived at a small motel, not too far from the witch's location. The scent of werewolves lingered in the air, a telltale sign of a nearby pack. Flint cautioned that this pack was loyal to Alpha Artemis, assuring that they wouldn't attack us off their land. Retrieving a piece of paper, Flint revealed the witch's contact number, shaking his head with uncertainty.
With a motel room reserved, Flint picked up the phone and dialed the number. Someone finally answered, and he requested a meeting. Hanging up the phone, Flint shared the news, his voice filled with caution.
"She agrees to meet, but insists we go to her. We must be extra cautious, as it appears she was anticipating our arrival.”
I understood, and it seemed Brutus did as well, ensuring me he would shift and tear any threat apart. "The werewolves in the pack nearby better not mess with us. I'll actually feel bad for them having to go up against you. I'm just lucky you are on our side," Flint joked with me. "Two versus a pack may be difficult," I admitted, although Brutus was dying for me to let him take control, right now. He needed a way to blow off steam after learning about the hell his mate has been through.
The two of us made our way to the witch's location and parked outside. Again, I felt an eerie calmness in the air, too calm. As we cautiously got out of the car, I was overwhelmed by multiple scents. The mixture of earthy woods, damp moss, and the faint smell of magic lingered in the air. "I knew this would not be easy," Flint growled as he shifted into his wolf form. Several wolves came running out of the surrounding woods around the house, their paws thudding against the ground.
I quickly followed suit, my heart pounding in my chest. The adrenaline surged through my veins, heightening my senses. The sound of growls and snarls filled the air as the wolves closed in on us.
"We will tear every last one of them to shreds and send a message. Anyone who dares to mess with or stand in our way of saving our mate will be destroyed," Brutus growled fiercely in my mind. And so, the battle began, our claws and teeth clashing against the fur and flesh of our adversaries.
